A ZEBRA SHOUT FRESH NEW ROMANCE

“Her characters come alive with warmth and purpose.” --Jodi Thomas, New York Times bestselling author

Broken Promise, Broken Heart

Aidan Somerville, Duke of Forster, is a rake, a spy, and a soldier, richer than sin and twice as handsome. Now he is also guardian to his deceased best friend’s young son. The choice makes perfect sense—except that the child’s mother is the lovely Sophia Gardiner, to whom Aidan was engaged before he went off to war. When the news reached him that she had married another, his ship had not yet even left the dock.

Sophia does not expect Aidan to understand or forgive her. But she cannot allow him to stay her enemy. She’s prepared for coldness, even vengeance—but not for the return of the heedless lust she and Aidan tumbled into ten years ago. She knows the risks of succumbing to this dangerous desire. Still, with Aidan so near, it’s impossible not to dream about a second chance…

Complex second-chance romance/spy story.
By OLT
(3.5 stars) I believe this is Rachel Miles' debut novel, unless she has been writing previously under a different name. If this is her first novel, she's to be commended on a professional job. Complex plot(s), interesting characters, competent writing, and good attention to historical period details. This is first and foremost a second-chance romance but there's more complexity to the plot than in most HRs I read. There are many secondary characters here, within the family and friends of H and h and within the other main plotline, a spy story.

The H, Aidan Somervillle, Duke of Forster, was born a younger son of a duke. As a young man he falls in love with the h, Sophia, who lives nearby. They become secretly engaged, and she promises to wait for him as he sets off to become a soldier (and spy). And then shortly after he leaves, she marries his best friend Tom Gardiner, Lord Wilcot, and she and Tom head off to Italy where they live for perhaps 10 years, until Tom's death.

After Tom's death, Sophia and her 10-year-old son Ian come back to England to live, as per Tom's request. And speaking of Tom and his requests, he has micromanaged several things before his death, one of them to name Aidan co-guardian of Ian, along with Sophia. This serves Aidan's purposes beautifully. Now is the perfect opportunity for revenge on Sophie for her betrayal of their young love. He'll get close to her through the guardian-ward relationship with Ian, seduce her and then dump her. Voilal! Instant revenge for what she did to him 10 years ago.

But that betrayal isn't as clear-cut as Aidan's memory would have it. What happened 10 years ago is much more complicated than Aidan's memory and perspective of the past. Now all the complexities of the Sophie-Tom, Sophie-Aidan, and Tom-Aidan relationships come out little by little as the story progresses.

And, in addition to these relationship issues, there is a complex spy-mystery plotline. Is Sophie a spy? How did Tom die? Was Tom a spy and for which side? There are some important papers missing, a deciphering code to find, a really nasty bad guy whose identity we don't fully learn in the story but probably can expect to know more about in later books.

This isn't your typical romance. It didn't give me any warm fuzzy feelings ever as I read the story. The H in particular is not exactly hero material but the h also keeps some vital information to herself that any self-respecting woman should have revealed to the interested party. I'd say my dissatisfaction with the H and h is what keeps me from giving this story a higher rating. It was hard to find myself in sympathy with either of the main characters. They made poor choices in their actions and that made the romance itself imperfect and unsatisfying.

The plot is interesting, the historical details are good, there is less predictability in certain events than is usual in a romance. The many secondary characters were developed well, although the references to prior events in their lives at times made me feel that I was reading the second or third book in a series. I'm assuming that as the series progresses I'll understand these people and events better than I do now. All in all, this book kept my interest and made me feel like an intelligent grownup as I read it. However, the faulty romance and some convoluted and poorly-explained events in several sections kept me from giving this a higher rating.

Not just another romance novel but with everything you want in one.
By Emily
Rachael Miles not only gave me a story (betrayal, suspense, unrequited desire) but then she complimented my role as a reader with tightly written sentences, plausible dialogue, meticulous attention to beautiful, period-specific clothing, and convincing delivery of a strong female character. The main character Sophia paints and possesses a knowledgeable understanding of botany that is extended throughout the novel. It is refreshing to read of a desirous woman who also boasts a clever intellect. Her intelligence and wit is evident throughout the book and in historically accurate ways that engage the reader beyond the story itself. Take for example when Sophia compares her own life to that of the book-making process at the time: “Sophia found in the bound manuscripts an image of her life: pages of disparate sizes all bound together with scribbles in the margins, marked out passages, and added leaves.”

But while I was interested in Sophia’s development as a character, the suspense of villains with knives, spurned love, building desire, and a male character in command of himself and others around him kept me reading. If you are looking for a swoon-worthy male character with none of the cheesy language typical of other poorly written dialogue, Aidan is your man. He is capable, strong, seductive, a bit of a romantic, and intuitive.
This isn’t some teenage romance with a boy who wields awkward attempts to woo a girl. Aidan pursues Sophia with the intention of a man who has lived years without getting what he wants, “Aidan stood before the mirror in his room, imagining all the paths to Sophia’s seduction.” If you are reading this review, insert an audible yes, please, and more.

Jilting the Duke is a story of love, betrayal, forgiveness, and second chances.

Aidan Somerville is the Duke of Forster – he is a rake, a spy, a soldier, a rich and handsome man, and now he’s the new guardian to his deceased childhood’s friend young son. He accepted the decision, knowing that it would be easier for him to cross paths with the woman who betrayed him, broke his heart and married another when he went off to war, his ex- fiance: Sophia Gardiner.

But Sophia was no longer the young, adventurous girl he once knew. She was now a hallow of a lady – her emotions, and actions are controlled. There were only two things she was passionate about: her plants, and her son, Ian. She didn’t expect Aidan to understand the reason behind what she did, nor to forgive her. She needed to be nice to him because he’s Ian’s new guardian. She already build the walls around her heart – but surprise visits, unexpected talks and stolen kisses make the bricks fall one at a time, until her walls are about to crumble down. Would she allow herself to dream of a second-chance with Aidan and risk her heart once again? Will Aidan have her once he finds out the truth?

Sophia is a strong female lead: she was educated the same as the boys in her family. She knew Greek, Latin and Geometry and she was great in Botany. She had a green thumb, and seriously knows her plants. I love her spirit: it’s sensitivity, generosity and having the grace under pressure. The anger that Aidan felt was understandable – he felt betrayed by the girl he loved and who promised to wait for him, and his best friend. But despite the fact, he still took his responsibility seriously and kept Sophia and Ian safe from danger.

I enjoyed reading this novel - although I had been looking forward for that heartbreaking-confrontation scene between Sophia and Aidan that I found a bit lacking (this is why it’s a 4.5) – nevertheless, everything else was flawless. Sophia and Ian were loved by the man who gave her his name and protection, by the people that surrounds them, and in a weird, crazy way – by Aidan.

This was an awesome start to a brand new historical romance series to look-forward to: The Muses’ Salon. This is my first Rachael Miles read, and I was astounded on how beautiful the novel was: the characters, the pacing, the plot, the twists and surprises, and the thrill. Her words will make you vividly see and feel the beauty of nature and the emotions in every page. Certainly, we have a new historical romance author to watch out for.
