A must for those wanting to know more about Gion Caminada and his work.

Normally I don’t rate things I haven’t read, watched, or used completely; however, there’s information about this collection that potential purchasers should know, so I’ll review the films I have watched and use this as an opportunity to provide that information. I've given this collection four stars, because as you’ll see below, not all of the films have English subtitles. I bought this primarily for the information about Gion Caminada, but also for the information about J�rg Conzett, Villa Girasole, and Peter Zumthor. Below are details and a few comments concerning those films:
IL GIRASOLE – A HOUSE NEAR VERONA (1995, 17 mins, Italian with subtitles in DE/FR/EN)
There’s information about the house I wish had been included; however, Schaub fits a great deal into 17 minutes and utilizes the medium well. This is the same film that WALLPAPER posted on its website.
PLACE, FUNCTION AND FORM – THE ARCHITECTURE OF GION A. CAMINADA AND PETER ZUMTHOR (1996, 24 mins, Rhaeto-Romanic with subtitles in DE/FR/EN)
This film also packs a great deal of material into its short length. It switches back and forth between the two architects, alternating between interviews and coverage of various projects. Caminada’s interviews are mostly out in Vrin; Zumthor’s interviews are in the incomplete Therme Vals and his original studio. Generally speaking, the coverage of Caminada’s projects tends to focus more on the exteriors, although some interiors are shown; whereas the coverage of Zumthor’s projects tends to be longer and more balanced between the exterior and interior.
THE VRIN PROJECT (1999, 48 mins, Rhaeto-Romanic with subtitles in DE/FR/EN)
When a building is published, it’s easy to detach it from its reality, altering its meaning and sometimes making its appreciation superficial. This film really brought home the point that Caminada’s buildings are created for a reality entirely different from my own.
A lazy, but quick way to characterize Gion Caminada is as a Swiss Hassan Fathy. With others, he has developed a plan to sustain his childhood village. His work, through its design, means of construction, materials, and formal language works as part of that plan.
This film documents several facets of Vrin and the plan, focusing heavily on Caminada’s work and interviews with individuals to portray the life of the inhabitants. Animal husbandry is a large part of Vrin’s economy and one of Caminada’s buildings is a butcher’s shop, so please note that this film shows that type of activity in detail, from the living animal to the final product. This film, as well as the proceeding one, complements GION A. CAMINADA. CUL ZUFFEL E L’AURA DADO (the most comprehensive publication of Caminada’s work) nicely.
THE ART OF JUSTIFICATION – J�RG CONZETT (2001, 14 mins, German with subtitles in FR/EN/IT)
This film focuses primarily on Conzett’s infrastructure work, especially the stunning Suransuns and Traversiner bridges.
