Where the Dead Lie (Sebastian St. Cyr Mystery), by C. S. Harris

In the latest mystery from the national bestselling author of When Falcons Fall, the gruesome murder of a young boy takes Sebastian St. Cyr from the gritty streets of London to the glittering pleasure haunts of the aristocracy...

London, 1813. Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, is no stranger to the dark side of the city, but he’s never seen anything like this: the brutalized body of a fifteen-
year-old boy dumped into a makeshift grave on the grounds of an abandoned factory.

One of London’s many homeless children, Benji Thatcher was abducted and tortured before his murder—and his younger sister is still missing. Few in authority care about a street urchin’s fate, but Sebastian refuses to let this killer go unpunished.

Uncovering a disturbing pattern of missing children, Sebastian is drawn into a shadowy, sadistic world. As he follows a grim trail that leads from the writings of the debauched Marquis de Sade to the city’s most notorious brothels, he comes to a horrifying realization: someone from society’s upper echelon is preying upon the city’s most vulnerable. And though dark, powerful forces are moving against him, Sebastian will risk his reputation and his life to keep more innocents from harm...

Review
Praise for When Falcons Fall

“Harris’ talent for character development, polished prose, and accurate, Regency-era details makes this eleventh or any of the previous 10 an easy starting point for newcomers to the Sebastian St. Cyr series...Psychologically atmospheric like Imogen Robertson’s Westerman and Crowther mysteries, with the skewering social wit of Anne Perry's Charlotte and Thomas Pitt novels, this is historical mystery at its best.”—Booklist (starred review)

“An engrossing tangled mystery and astonishing tale about a tragic search for identity. An excellent choice for St. Cyr fans and readers of historical mysteries.”—Library Journal

“Strong...[an] intricate murder puzzle.”—Publishers Weekly

Praise for the Sebastian St. Cyr Mystery Series

“This riveting historical tale of tragedy and triumph, with its sly nods to Jane Austen and her characters, will enthrall you.”—Sabrina Jeffries, New York Times bestselling author

“Sebastian St. Cyr is everything you could want in a Regency-era nobleman-turned–death investigator: uncannily clever, unwaveringly reserved, and irresistibly sexy. The entire series is simply elegant.”—Lisa Gardner, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“Thoroughly enjoyable . . . Moody and atmospheric, exposing the dark underside of Regency London.”—Deanna Raybourn, New York Times bestselling author

Grim but so engrossing
By Mtlnative
Although the subject matter of the book--child abuse and murder--was very grim, the story was gripping. Maybe it was because the subject matter was so grim that it was gripping. It isn't for the fainthearted. I usually avoid gritty literature but I am a St. Cyr junkie. I have read every single of the St. Cyr series in order. In fact, this is the first one where I wish she had written this one AND the next at the same time and released them as the ending of the book leaves several questions still to be answered. A "regular" character dies in the book and although the death isn't given to be mysterious, reading between the lines I think it is and I can't wait to see in the next book if I am right.
I obtained the book the day it was released and finished it four days later in spite of being on a very busy vacation. One of the things that could be annoying about the St. Cyr series is the way that Sebastian goes around and around to different suspects. However, I decided that it is understandable given the century that St. Cyr is operating in. There is no real, organized, police force, no forensic lab, no DNA. And the dialogue between the characters is so well done. I think it fits the period quite well.
For other St. Cyr addicts who haven't yet read the book, this really is one of her best. If you haven't read the St. Cyr series, this isn't the one to begin with. It really is a series that is meant to be read in order.

Horrific serial torture murders, mostly ignored by authorities--but not by Sebastian
By April
12th book! The writing is as impeccable and rich and well-researched as always. All characters major and minor and fascinating, with their own histories. We have intrigue and social issues and historical incidents and personages and personal interactions... Action, danger and murder, of course. All this remains a staple of one of the best historical mystery series around. I'd highly recommend a read--starting from the beginning.

This time Sebastian becomes involved in a murder that the authorities have ignored: the death of a child abandoned on the streets to survive. Sebastian and his associates are shocked by the cruelty of the death (torture and rape before death), but others see this as just one of many throwaway lives--poor, disenfranchised, worthless, of no account.

While the books immediately previous to this involved some major historical events and personages, this mystery harked back to some earlier ones where Jervis, Sebastian's powerful and ruthless father-in-law, moved behind the scenes and possibly had too much of a hand in the events. And Sebastian is back to having to sort out the relationship with his father.

The historical personage of this book is not a major player, but the author of a book that is mentoned: 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade. As always, some interesting little tidbits are revealed. I love how Harris works in stuff like that!

Unusual for the series... there are some things left unresolved--mystery-wise. There have been threads that have been running through the series, of course, but usually more to do with Sebastian's personal life. Oh--the mystery is solved--never worry! Just some threads left for the future.

This book is perhaps not my favorite, but still a very worthy addition to the series, and well worth reading.

Could have been better
By Donald F. Kaminski
Not as good as her previous installments. The subject of the book is one that has been beaten to death by writers of 19th century novels. Apparently, the sexual exploitation of children must have been a serious perversion for the English during this period since I've seen it in so many books. The story might be described as somber and gloomy. And again, Sebastian gets his arm banged up. One would think that after all his encounters over the past 12 novels, both his arms would be non-functional. At least, he seems to have gotten over the hatred he had for his father, which was getting to appear as though it were a psychosis. Considering the circumstances, it certainly appeared to be "aby-normal." Harris also fell back to her original over indulgence (first book) with the term "bloody hell." If a reader wants to get a good handle on the local street language, the best author for early 19th century slang was Kate Ross. On the other hand, the most entertaining early 19th century stories were written by Ashley Gardner. Nonetheless, I very much liked Harris' stories, but this one lacked zing. I have also enjoyed the interaction of Sebastian with his family relations, although I think the hatred exhibited between Sebastian and Hero's father, Jarvis, is over the top.
