In this first and only biography on the life and boxing career of heavyweight boxing contender Joe Jennette, author Joe Botti chronicles the life and career of this interracial athlete who competed in the longest boxing contest of the twentieth century. From 1904 to 1922 Jennette faced and defeated the most dangerous fighters of his era, including Jack Johnson, Sam Langford, and Sam McVea. Jennette was unable to secure a title shot due to the fact that the world was fixated with finding a Caucasian boxer to defeat Jack Johnson in the "great white hope" era. The story deals with the struggles of interracial romance, racism, and the world of boxing in the early twentieth century. Joe Botti is the Founder and Head Coach of the Union City Boxing Club in Union City, N.J. He studied at William Paterson University in Wayne, N.J. A former amateur boxer, Botti has trained over 30 New Jersey Golden Glove champions and currently manages and trains professional and amateur boxers.

An Acquired Taste ... Unusual but Interesting ...

I have to say when I first picked up this book I was pissed. Here I was, extremely excited to read a bio of this legendary fighter that looked well researched and deep ... to say I was shocked was to put it mildly .. the author chose a most unusual style ... he wrote this book as an autobiography except he is not Joe Jennette so in essence in some ways this is a work of fiction. One cannot simply play Joe Jennette and offer personal insight after personal insight and claim it to be factual . It sat on my shelf for a month. Finally I picked it up again and started to read and read and read... I then was able to appreciate the tremendous amount of quality research the author did and enjoyed many a golden nugget from the direct articles posted in the book Pollack style ... here's my bottom line ... if you want a bio it's not really a bio ... it's kind of a hybrid and at the end of the day I do respect his effort, labor of love and his talent as a writer and it has grown on me big time over time. On the research alone I give it five stars ... without question a must read for historians ...

Fiction disguised as fact

I was so excited to get this book, I have wanted to read the exploits of a boxing immortal like Joe Jennette for years.
This man did virtually everything in the ring and was one of the best heavyweights of the day, quite possibly the equal of better of the great Jack Johnson.
Imagine my surprise to find that this book was written in the first person as if Jennette had written it himself. I am sorry but this was not the way to have written the book. Jennette has been dead for over half a century so it is not as if it could be written as an As Told By...
Now I don't wish to denigrate the writing ability of the author, he is very clever and the book did read well, but I simply couldn't take to a book that was fiction disguised as fact.
Still waiting for a real biography of Joe Jennette.

Taking on All Comers

It is difficult to look back over a hundred years and call the great fighters of that era pioneers. They were actually a generation evolved from the group of fighters who fought John L Sullivan (and whom Sullivan avoided. But the quartet of Jack Johnson, Sam McVea, Sam Langford and Joe Jennette were as fine a group of fighters who ever competed at one time in the Heavyweight division.
The most famous, and historically relevant was Jack Johnson, who knocked out Marvin Hart to win the Championship, and later knocked out James Jeffries in 1910. The subtext of this book deals with the damage that Johnson did to other Black fighters and to himself by his behavior, and also the persecution that Johnson himself was subjected to.
McVea and Langford were wonderful, fearless warriors, who may have been great fighters in any era.
Joe Jennete is the subject of this book, and may have been the best of all these fighters. He belongs in the argument, as he was a fearless, relentless and professional battler, who never ducked any fighter. Jennette was also an anomaly, as he was born of a mixed racial marriage, and settled into a mixed racial marriage in a far less enlightened society than we have today.
He travelled to France to fight, and was pleasantly surprised at how acceptant the French were of him, and his peers.
Jennette was a well spoken gentleman who was acclaimed as a true credit to the fight game, comforting himself inside and out of the ropes, and earning the respect of all who came in contact with him.
The book itself is interesting and reads easily, made even better for the boxing historian who knows about the men Jennette fought.
The author calls this an historical narrative, but I am not clear if these were really Jennette's own words. I suspect not.
If not, there are many private thoughts and feelings here, and it would defray a real story, and diminish a biography.
If the reader can look past this, it is a very interesting and remarkable read.
