It is written beautifully with clarity

The book, "When You Hold a Patient's Hand....Don't Wear a Glove" by Dr. Stuart Gilbert is a major contribution in the field of Cancer. It is written beautifully with clarity, humility, and compassion about his cancer patients , including facts and recent research about radiation, chemo, breast cancer, lung cancer, Leukemia, colon cancer, prostrate cancer and the side effects of medications. One of the important things Dr. Gilbert writes about is the need for compassionate care and support of each cancer patient. He also stresses the importance of professionals working in the field sharing their experiences, communicating with each other, about their findings and use of methods and procedures and medications in helping their patients. The best part of the book is that Dr. Gilbert writes so well that he has the ability to explain complicated medical issues and information to BOTH professionals in the filed as well as the general public and of course those who do have cancer. When You Hold A Patient’s Hand…Don’t Wear A Glove, By Stuart Gilbert, MD, was a delight to read. Being a contemporary physician with Dr. Gilbert, I was struck by how many similar experiences of my own his personal and poignant examples brought back to memory.
His stated goal was to leave an accounting of his professional life and career for his grandchildren. He accomplished far more. He left a blueprint of the striving for, and attainment of, true medical professionalism. His recounting of his early life experiences included having a physician father, a supportive family, educational opportunities, and a culture that supported and valued the characteristics that go into a successful professional life.
His career accomplishments and examples of the learning that he obtained from his experiences with patients and colleagues demonstrate many qualities of professionalism. Honesty and basic human consideration were evident in all of the situations he described. His career as described is a clear example of the successful management of the contractual and reciprocal relationships that occur between a true professional and the members of his/her defined community.
Many who aspire to become a medical professional (or in other professions) often are not as fortunate to have the ready and appropriate role models that Dr. Gilbert had. As it turns out, Dr. Gilbert himself became an exceptional role model for those who have been associated with him through the years. Through his book one can appreciate some of the types of experiences that help develop professional behavior.
I would recommend this book for anyone embarking on a professional career. In addition, it is a pleasant read about life in general.

Dr. Stuart Gilbert's first book, "When You Hold a Patient's Hand...Don't Wear a Glove" is a well written and very thought provoking personal account of an accomplished Radiation Oncologist from Maine. Dr. Gilbert uses his experience working in multiple hospitals and with a great diversity of patients to emphasize the importance of the doctor/patient relationship in the healing process. It is obvious that Dr. Gilbert cares greatly about his patients, not only to assist them through the very difficult process of coping with a cancer diagnosis, but also to understand them as fellow human beings.
Dr. Gilbert begins with a history of his family and their ties to the medical profession. But it is not really a story of a family that has become accomplished in the medical field, rather it is, beginning with his father, an account of how through the practice of medicine, one can work with patients while also establishing that personal relationship that can be critical in the treatment process.
With many personal accounts of cancer patients, some successfully treated and some not, Dr. Gilbert gives a very convincing argument that without a positive personal relationship between doctor and patient, the prospects of success are greatly diminished. This is a must read for anyone in the health care field.
