This includes the St. Louis Bears Postmaster Provisionals, Scott 11X1-11X8, which advanced in the 2008 Scott United States Specialized Catalogue and now advance once again in the 2009 Volume 1. Strong gains were also made for some back of the book items such as the 1879 1� - 50� Postage Due Special Printings, along with scattered increases in the Officials. More than 23,000 value changes were made for stamps of the British Commonwealth, with Australia leading the way with more than 4,800 changes. The Australian market remains quite strong for both the Australian States and Australia proper.

The Joys of Owning a Complete Set of Scott's Postage Stamp Catalogues

Scott’s 2009 Catalogue is essential to me for several reasons.
First, as I build my stamp collection, I know I cannot collect one or more of every stamp made. That was never my intention. I started collecting stamps when I was 15 years old. Why? Because I loved geography and stamps helped me get a taste of the various areas and nations of the world. I was thrilled to read the foreign words and see such things as the wild animals in Africa. I did not own a stamp catalogue until the late 1980s when I was given an old set of Scott’s 1983 catalogues. Using this set, I was able to find and put on my “Want List” various series of stamps that were particularly interesting to me. I could choose the stamps I bought which allowed me to tailor my collection to images, countries, history, and times that intrigued me. Also, when I joined the Navy after I graduated from high school, I lost some of my beloved books as well as my early stamp collection. The stamp catalogue allowed me to locate stamps that I had lost when I lost my childhood collection.
Second, over the years, my old albums became inadequate because they were fixed in time. All the old blank spots on the pages were quickly filled with all the new stamps being produced. The short time solution was to buy a loose leaf album which I could update yearly with supplement pages. I bought a Citation Album, but as I added supplement pages, I had to buy a second and then a third Citation Album, which I grouped countries in alphabetical order. I also bought a Liberty Album for United States’ stamps. Fighting the post configuration of the Citation and Liberty Albums and bothered by the price, I bought large notebook binders and moved my collection into them. This allowed me to add new supplement pages with ease and to add new “blank” pages which I could design myself. Then, I ran into a new problem. I have pages and pages which do not contain stamps! Not only that, but I was unable to get past supplement pages which I had missed. Scott’s Stamp catalogue is helping me build my own pages tailored to the stamps which define my collecting philosophy. In fact, I am going to remove the “tons” of blank supplement pages and keep them in a supplement folder. Using my stamp catalogue, I will be able to build a collection of stamps rather than unfilled stamp pages. I can sort what I have into time periods for each country.
Third, I have found Scott’s Stamp Catalogues are the best resource for me for identifying variations in stamps of a series due to printing and other errors or other factors. It helps me identify Cinderella stamps as well as frauds. The color listing is helpful as well.
My old 1983 Scott’s Album became so outdated that I could no longer figure out where to put my “old” newer stamps! I decided to update my catalogues, but the cost of new ones (even used new ones) was well beyond the amount of money I wanted to pay. So, I went to Amazon.com and found the newest complete set of catalogues for the best price. The 2009 edition just jumped out at me! At first, I thought I could do a mismatch – that is, buy cheaper 2010 or so catalogues and mix them with the 2009 editions when the price was prohibitive. However, the alphabetical coverage was different and I liked the idea of getting a matched set.
I am ever glad I did buy Scott’s 2009 Stamp Catalogues! These sellers were tremendous as my orders came in! I bought Volume 1 from “book 2012”, Vol. 2 & 3 “Daily Deals”, Vol. 4 “barginHunters”, Vol. 5 “TSCBOOKS” and Vol. 6 from “betterworldbooks”. I have since ordered “Scott Specialized Catalogue of United States Stamps & Covers 2009” and am eagerly awaiting its arrival.
But, I received a lot more than I expected! This is awesome! The 2009 addition is in color! I can readily see that the color Lake is a red color. More than that, it is so good to be able to locate a stamp by color as well as by image.
A second “WOW” factor is that I found that I could compare prices from my old 1983 catalogue to my new 2009 catalogue and get an indication of how some stamps I bought in the past have increased in value.
I wish you the best as you grow your stamp collection and highly recommend that you purchase a fairly recent edition of the Scott’s Stamp Catalogue.
